My boyfriend is working in Minneapolis during the week, and he very coyly asked me if I could find a recipe for Minnesota Wild Rice Soup. So your recipe is a godsend for us in Dallas. (BTW, I looked at many other recipes, but yours was by far the most endearing.) Made the rice, have the mise going, and can't wait to have a big bowl!

This looks about right.

We lived and worked in downtown Minneapolis for many years; I was a concierge and the hubby was a chef. We knew the best places to find this soup and ate it as often as possible. Now having lived in Oregon for the past seven years (and we haven't had the soup for about that long, too) we decided to make it as a holiday treat. The rice is cooked and the broth is ready and... Uh oh - we don't even have a recipe for the stuff! Glad to find your post. And your blog. Thanks!

One side note: We've never seen it made with ham (chix and turkey are most common in the soup made in MN) so we'll have to try that variation next. Cheers!

Made this soup tonight and it was FABULOUS!! I doubled the recipe because we are a big family and like left-overs. The only thing I did differently was to add a can of drained corn niblets. Definitely a keeper. My family is already asking me when I'll be making it again. Thanks!

no no no
you need to put the flour in after you sautee the vegetables and make a slurry (stir constantly to avoid burning), then add the other stuff.

now i want wild rice soup.

Jen, I'm glad to see you liked it! It's a little bit like making gravy- you have to slowly add the liquid to the flour in the little bowl, pushing any stray clumps into the side of the bowl to break them up, so that it forms a really smooth paste, and then adding more liquid to make it really soupy before putting it in the pot. That way you should avoid the flour clumps.

My hubby's grandpa sends wild rice over to CA from MN all the time, so I had to try this! Came out delicious, but I had a problem adding the flour thickener into the soup and ended up with clumps of flour floating around! I'm an idiot, what did I do wrong? Luckily I was able to scoopem out and it still tasted great :P

What a great story! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the food here in Minnesota. Did you get a chance to try lutefisk? I kid!

The soup sounds delicious! I love a good wild rice soup.
